Actually I think what ESPN cares about most is viewership.

Even if BYU is losing, if we have big viewership numbers, they couldn't care less. That's their revenue stream.

Obviously more wins generally = more viewership, because you'll draw in more fair weather / casual fans, but if we have a diehard fan base, we'll be alright no matter what happens on the field.
