June 30th, my wife and I and another couple were backpacking back out of the Grandaddy Basin, where we'd been camping for 2 days. The guy with me was wearing his BYU hat.
Along the trail, we ran into 3 guys on horseback, on their way into the basin. We got off the trail and I held my dog so they could more easily pass. They were friendly enough, but the last guy, on seeing my buddy's hat, said, "You know they don't allow BYU fans up here." We responded with silence, and his 2 buddies didn't say anything either. He followed up with, "I just said what they were thinking."
They continued on, and so did we. I eventually thought of something I could have responded with--it was dumb, but I was dehydrated and tired: "At least BYU fans pull their own weight." Or maybe I could have said, "Your horse's backside sure has bad opinions." But, in retrospect, I'm glad I didn't say anything.
