It used to be that you grew up near your aunts/uncles/cousins (with both parents at home). Things like birthday parties/Christmas/Thanksgiving were these magical parties centered around family.. these parties couldn't be replicated anywhere else... they kept people near their birthplace (or brought them back to their birthplace after a short time away).
Now... your mom hates your dad's new wife and the new wife can't stand your mom's new boyfriend.... and that's just the start of it... so Christmas sucks because your mom is pissed that you want to spend any time with your dad (because he's sleeping with "that whore" and how could you even stand to be around "that whore") etc etc...
so we're finding in NYC that people who are leaving Columbus Ohio to go get job experience in NYC are much less likely to ever move back to Columbus (as was the normal 30 years ago). They feel that because of what's back in Columbus, it isn't worth returning....
