Had the same experience. Getting outside the BYU bubble was a little shocking.

I probably didn't live in Utah long enough to qualify according to OP, and I may over-generalize a little. But it's a different type of Mormon world than I was used to and I didn't stay long enough for it to grow on me. Maybe if I had raised kids there I might have changed my tune a bit.
