It skews the picture, so you can't look at points by opponents. I would agree that scoring per possession is a good stat to look at, but again, the slow pace and coming from behind makes that a poor plan for success. I agree that field position is also negatively effected by the defense we ran last year. I remember a lot of long fields that our pitiful offense was supposed to cross. The first to comes to mind is LSU, but one thing to consider is that field position is also somewhat controlled by our offense. We didn't capitalize often on short fields with our offense either.
