What Max did was considered a non-football play.
You can't pretend there's something wrong with the ball, fake an injury, act like there's something that's keeping you from taking the snap, or anything else the makes the officials or other team think there's something truly out of the ordinary.

Again, you can shift all you want before the snap as long as you're set and ina legal formation when the ball is snapped
