Struggling coaches often speak in this manner. They use these nuggets to buy themselves another week of trying, and,
hopefully, to pacify fans. They make comments that sound like good observations. But then two seconds later you realize, "Well, duh." A former Hawaii Coach that struggled mightily for three years said to the media after verbally tearing into his players during a practice: "We're right on the brink of turning this thing around. And sometimes players don't take things seriously enough. You have to get on them sometimes to make them understand that anything other than their best won't work." He was fired a month later.
