The truth is this has been going on forever. The NBA wants huge stars. Those huge stars now want to, and can easily play in huge markets. Those huge stars get different calls than everyone else, which makes the league more money. The refs that don’t give those stars preferential calls don’t get to officiate as many games as those who do, especially not playoff games which pay the refs well. This incentive is well documented and has been confirmed by NBA referees. It’s not a secret, even though every one with eyeballs, already knew that.
