I had another kid turn 16, and I had a family member hand down a car that's been kicking around the family for 20 years to me. It's a mid-90's Lincoln Town car. My wife's grandpa bought it new, then when he died, we started passing it around the family. It's been the first car that several of my kids and their cousins have driven. It's now a family tradition that the newest 16 year old driver gets the Lincoln, and then when someone else turns 16, they turn over custody. Basically it's a free car that my daughter will drive for the next 8 months until the next 16 year old comes along.
Before my daughter turned 16, it was unused for about 6 months. It sat in a barn, and I had to put a charger on the battery to get it to start. Surprisingly, the battery held a charge, and she's been driving it for the past 2 weeks. On her way home last night, it was dark, and her headlights started to get dimmer and dimmer, then the car cut off completely. I went and jumped her car, but about 30 seconds after I pulled the jumper cables off, the car died. I pulled the battery and took it home and charged it, then went back to the side of the road and reinstalled the battery. I t started fine, and I drove it home.
On the drive home, I noticed that the idiot light for the battery/alternator kept going off and on. I assume I either have a bad alternator or the cable coming off the alternator is corroded somewhere. I'm going to try to troubleshoot this tonight. Is there anything else I should be looking at?
