The eventual kicker earn the position, 4 stars or not. I know of a kid who also attended a kicker tryout. He happened to play on the same comp team as Gay while they were in JR and SR high school. This kid was the best kicker at the tryout. It wasn’t close. He was given a similar story and turned away. BYU doesn’t do the kicking thing right. More should be earned by those who are leaned upon for such important kicks. They should always be under pressure to perform.
