Most likely the RPMs were too low (lots of reasons for this in the cold on an old car) and when your kid
shifted, it stalled out.

I bet it's working just fine now.

So you can start to troubleshoot possible causes: (failing MAF/MAP, intake vacuum leak, old spark plugs, bad fuel, bad fuel filter, failing injectors, clogged cat, bad IAT, bad pulleys/belts, etc.)

or.....have your kid get up 5 minutes earlier and warm it up. That will most likely cure it.
