Uber and Lyft: Do these drivers not realize they are not making any money?

My son was thinking about doing this is Utah County.  Apparently there are a lot of drivers in Utah County, so the drivers rarely have rides and make even less in the county than other places.  It would be much better to answer surveys online than drive for Uber according to one article I read.

According to this NPR article, drivers are making $3.37 an hour.  What a waste of time, gas and the wear and tear on your car.
