This ALWAYS happened to me. So now I change them once a year. It might be overkill since most batteries are rated to last longer. But never being awakened in the middle of the night is absolutely worth it.

I do it Conference Weekend in April. Weird, I know, but it’s an easy way for me to remember. I also change the furnace filters - which is another thing I would regularly forget to change.
