I'll try to defend...Aztec Natl. Ruins Monument is cool, and near Farmington

Also at least in Farmington, you're somewhat close to Durango CO which is a cool little town even in the parking meter cops are up tight. 😉
and you're also not far from Aztec NM which has some cool Pueblo ruins.

...there are probably a hundred small towns in west Texas worst that Farmington.

Those are the good parts of the Mojave Desert. You should try 29 Palms, Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley.
