The Ute tribe is very dedicated to tradition & history and very protective of
its name and its image but they also love (and need and deserve) their money. I think the real reason you won't see the change is because the Ute tribe is the main lobbyist for the school to keep their current moniker. Why?

University of Utah Utes: "Utes" trademarked by the Ute tribe. Utah pays royalties for the use of the name.
University of Utah Red Tail Hawks: Red Tail Hawks not trademarkable (it's now a word) by the tribe. Utah pays nothing for the use of the name.

Circle & Feather Logo: Trademarked by the Ute tribe. Used under royalty agreement with the Ute tribe
Red Tail Hawk Logo: Not trademarked by the tribe. University pays no one for its use.

Like I said, the tribe loves its history and tradition but the last time I looked, the next time history and tradition pays bills will be the first.
