Since the rule changes to make kick off safer it’s had a huge impact. From 24%

To 8% this year People focus on not being able to overload one side but I think think the biggest difference is teams can no longer get a running start when the kicker kicks it. They are standing still when he kicks it which has a huge impact on trying to recover

That’s a huge unintended side effect of the new rules. They’ve effectively killed the onside kick as a viable option.
