So if he went anywhere other than BYU his LDS membership would not be a factor??
That is what you are eluding to and I think that is not true. If he went to another school and served a mission, his story would be just as unique and just as good PR for the church. This idea that BYU is some sort of Mecca for LDS kids needs to stop. Wasn't it the very namesake of our school who told members to STOP coming to Utah and to establish stakes of zion where they lived?

BYU is great, I loved it there as a student, but it is not the only school out there. In many respects, I think having LDS athletes playing outside BYU give the Church even more PR. An RM starter at BYU, no one cares as they are a dime a dozen. A RM starter at a P5, that is a story that will be written about in the student and local press every year. If he is as good an athlete as Taysom, the Church will get mentioned in articles several times a year to readership that is vastly not familiar with our religion.

I would love the top LDS talent at BYU just so we could be more competitive, but there is absolutely no reason they should feel any sort of responsibility to be here just because they are members.
