The Big East and ACC have a pretty bruising style of play during their conference season. The Pac-12, MWC, and WCC don't allow as much physicality. As a result, the Western teams are sometimes not prepared for the physicality in the NCAA tournament and sometimes wash out early as a result.

This is just a casual observation from a casual fan, so I could be completely off base here, but that's at least my perception.
