suicide. A cap on my care is imposed by others. I don't want other people making that decision for me. I want to make it myself.
This is also a problem with any/all surrogate decisionmakers — if you need life saving treatment and you haven't previously indicated what you want, then a family member decides for you, creating all sorts of financial incentives.
And I think you can avoid the abuse by making a decision made only by the patient, while still cogent. I get to make my own decision, and I have to make it while I'm cognitively okay. So today, I can fill out a form indicating my wishes. If I get to a certain state, I want out. Then when I reach that state, as established by neutral, third-party experts, I'm done.
