so, I agree with the distaste for confirmation bias, rumor mongering, uncomfirmed nonsense, etc, etc, etc ... those are all problems and they're stupid.
But let me ask you this. *IF* it was shown that BYU did exactly what was described, would you have a problem with that? If BYU does this type of thing more than necessary and more than other institutions, would you have a problem with it? 'Cause I definitely would.
I *SUSPECT* (DO NOT KNOW, JUST SUSPECT) that:
* BYU has some dweebs calling some shots that they shouldn't be calling
* BYU is denying admission to some athletes that we'd all be better off if they'd admit
I suspect this because of my personal experience, because of the increasing frequency of these types of anecdotal stories, and because nobody's providing credible alternate explanations for why people aren't getting in.
So, yes, we shouldn't dogmatically believe stupid stuff, but neither should we ignore what appears to be a potential problem. If anything could kill my BYU sports fandom, it would be the confirmation that this type of dynamic exists in a significant degree.
