BYU has more access to private gyms than any team in the country.
I understand what you are saying about being hampered with no being able to have a typical morning shoot arounds at the hotel but are there no chapels in Las Vegas or Henderson? If Rose and the coaching staff really felt like the team necessitated a shoot around, there isn't a team in the country with more access to private basketball courts. They easily could have called a bishop or stake president to get a key to the many chapels located in Las Vegas or neighboring Henderson. The member population in that area is really high, look at the amount of football players and basketball recruits that have come from there. Even if a regular chapel or stake center court was not big enough for them, they could easily have contact one of the many high school coaches in the area and practiced there or at UNLV. They recruit that area enough to have close relationships with ever basketball coach and principle in the area. Heck, the game was at 10pm, St George and Mesquite is not that far away, either.
Outside of Utah and Idaho, the Henderson area has one of the most members per capita other than maybe Arizona and Laie. Look at every BYU football and basketball game versus UNLV, BYU is practically has a home crowd. They had an off night and lost it mentally after going down 13-0. It has nothing to do with travel, rest, format, shoot around, or anything else. The WCC talent level has improved and the lower tiered teams are better than in the past. San Diego had an incredible game, played solid defense, and got into the heads of BYU player early on. BYU responded to San Diego's hot start by jacking up off balance and contested 3s, instead of going inside where Childs and Baxter should have had an advantage. Haws would not drive inside for the first 5-7 minutes, even though he was really off. Players have off nights and by the time they finally started going inside to Childs and the guards started drawing fouls, it was too late because San Diego believed the game was theirs to lose. San Diego played aggressive and wanted it more.
