Mainly....its the age of the two players. Trout is 27 at the time of this deal and Pujols was 32. Trout's statistical trajectory is still upward. At the time Albert signed it was clear that his numbers had plateaued and he was already in decline.
27-33 or 34 years is usually when a star players has his best years, and barring injury it is likely that Trout will be 1st or 2nd in MVP balloting in most of those years.
When you look at Trout's career numbers he's on a trajectory to being one of the greatest players of ALL FREAKING TIME.
The Angels are locking down THE premiere player in the league right now. They've got another potential superstar in Ohtani and Eppler is doing a good job of rebuilding the farm system.
There is no doubt that the end of the deal is problematic, since he will 39 when it expires, but unless his body starts to really break down in the same way that Pujols did, he will likely still be above average until he's in his late 30's.
