Sure. It would be better to have no addictions at all. No question. But there is also no question that "addictions"
(and I put it in quotes because working out like this does not qualify as addiction the same way) like this one are almost never nearly as destructive as heroine.

So, yes. Less destructive. Would it be better for him to not have any of the underlying mental issues that cause either situation? Yes. This can be a life-saving tool though.
