You're not wrong. I think the first 8 games you're aiming for 5-3.
Go 1-3 in the first four and 4-0 the next four. But all 8 of those games are certainly lose-able:

1- Utah. Don't need to analyze this one. You can lose to Utah.
2- @ TN. Road game against a TN team that has almost everyone back from last year's underwhelming squad.
3- USC. Posters on this board just outright dismissing playing USC are hilarious. USC's last 5 recruiting class rankings (from 24/7): 20, 4, 4, 10, and 2 (average 8th). BYU's over that same stretch: 79, 78, 66, 49, and 65 (average 67th). USC's coaching staff isn't very good, but BYU's staff has to do a good job of outcoaching them, because USC is the most-talented team BYU will face in a while (ahead of Wisconsin, at least according to 247, which had a 5-year average of 38 last year).
4- UW. They'll be worse than last year without Browning, Gaskin, their entire starting secondary, and some other pieces. Still, they're very well-coached and well-prepared, and they've got a lot of talent too.
5- @ Toledo. This is a decent Toledo team that returns a lot, and on the road.
6- @ USF. This is another decent USF team that returns a lot, and on the road now two weeks.
7- Boise. Boise is a good team. They need a QB, and who knows what they have, but their defense should be very good. This could be 2019's NIU game.
8- @ USU. The road environment isn't the problem, but USU has a very good QB. I don't know what they have coming back on OL, but Love can take over a game if you let him.

Then you'll win 9, 10, and 11 before going to San Diego to face Long's Aztecs. You can lose that game too.

Now this seems like a very optimistic post (for a Ute), but I think you'll go 1-2 in games 2-4 (you're not beating Utah this year), upsetting one of the 3 other P5 teams. I think you lose one of the next four if you're good, 2 if you're average, but no more than that. Then the SDSU game will decide if your ending is 6-6, 7-5, or 8-4.

Of course, if you're bad or there are some key injuries, you could go 3-9, but I don't think that's likely.
