Specifically extra curricular things like ballroom dance as someone mentioned above, or marching band, or drill, or pretty much anything that isn’t a purely “academic” pursuit that results in a degree?
For the record I’m not in favor of charging students a mandatory athletics fee but I do fail to see how that is different than any other pursuit that isn’t specifically leading to a degree in that chosen pursuit. Why the double standard? Is it because with football income athletics do mostly pay for themselves so people have come to the conclusion that they simply have to do that and no other funds can go to them?
And why would athletics be any less worthy of support than band, dance, drama, or any other thing that isn’t going to lead to a living after school is finished? In fact I’d bet more athletes at any given school go in to make livings at their chosen activity than do actors or musicians. How many money making actors have come out of BYU in the last 5 decades in co parison to money making athletes?
