It's been awhile, but we stayed in Kaanapali at the Alii and The Whaler.
Close to everything, lots of places to walk and eat next to the beach. Close to Lahaina for more walking, shopping and the harbor.

We visited friends in Kihei, they were on the water side of the highway in a condo, it was OK, reminded me of condo row in Provo though. Lot's of decorative concrete brick work. Complex after complex.

We stayed up towards Kapalua on one visit, it's shocking how much cooler/wetter it is up there and the beaches are no good.

Hana was overrated for us, no fun to burn a day inside a car. We actually broke the law and drove all the way around since we thought the road TO Hana wasn't worth repeating on the way back. Charles Lindbergh's grave is a ways beyond Hana, the red sand beach just past Hana was nice. After you get around the southern end it's amazing how arid and dry it is, like a moonscape. The road does not hug the coast you end up going up into the foothills rather than connect with Wailea on the water.

Biking down Haleakala at sunrise was memorable in a "did it once" sort of way. Molokini does not have the sea life you think it should, but it's hard not to go out to a crater offshore and assume there will be good things to see. We also went sailfishing, but instead spent 8 hours grinding around Lanai trying to get something to bite. In all honesty, I would've mounted some of the baitfish they were using to lure the marlin. We got skunked, that was a long day.

Helicopter tour for sure.

I know you didn't ask about things to do, but it just came out. We'd probably stay in Kaanapali again if we do Maui again.
