I know nothing about Ty’Son’s qualifications and also nothing about his status with admissions. I don’t think anyone on this board really knows.
I also do not understand what you mean by “merit.” I do know that BYU lacks in diversity and the lens through which we look at “merit” should take that into consideration.
I absolutely believe that the lack of diversity at BYU is not purposeful but it is what it is and the lack of diversity itself perpetuates exclusivity. One way to attack this issue would be to make special efforts at inclusion.
This is not just about sports, it’s about how BYU makes an effort to facilitate the development of a more diverse student body. I previously sat on an admissions committee for a medical school on the East Coast. Diversity was important and providing opportunities for underprivileged applicants was also important.
There are many ways to look at merit and there are situations that deserve special consideration. It is not as simple as scores on a test or grades on a transcript.
