But the caveat is you'd need to have enough points to cover a one way flight for that person. In this case, the person donating would have to donate the 13K points to book the flight, whereas it sounds like the OP is trying to cobble together enough points to cover a flight by getting an extra 5K points from someone. It's cleaner for the donee to pay the transfer costs of the points and then book it himself.
