You're talking about something different than I. Understanding that there
were different times and attitudes while consuming media from times in the past is different than let's say laughing as hard as people might have back then while watching someone in blackface imitate an "uneducated negro or mammy" as a humorous archetype.

I'm not saying we should be offended and if my OP indicated that, I apologize, but I mean I wouldn't enjoy the humor at the level the masses did back then say if for instance in a movie someone joked about stringing a black person up or lynching them or referred to Arabs as Sand N---ers or Towelheads.

Or when an actor hits and slaps women because it's funny might be one (not saying all of these are offensive, etc.)

If you feel laugh as hard at those jokes today as they did back then, you're certainly entitled to and I'm no saint (in the colloquial meaning) but when I see those things, although I understand the differences between then and now, and I understand the humor intended, I don't feel I should adopt the mentality at play in order to get the joke.

I hope I'm making myself clear. Understanding the intent vs. engaging in the mentality extant (racism, sexism, whatever) in order to laugh as hard at the racist or sexist joke.

Maybe I'm wrong for distinguishing and jokes on stringing up negoes are as funny today as they were back then and should be laughed at at the same way. But I think we can appreciate the different time those things happened in with out being approving of it or engaging in it with the same mentality, if that makes any sense.
