Gary Crowton is a great guy. Sucks things turned out like they did
One of these days I want to sit down with him and ask where the train came off the tracks.
We had a very interesting discussion about Luke Staley. Like everything in life, the true story is way more complicated than you can summarize in a paragraph. People who should have known better said and did some stupid things but it was individual, not institutional.
When I left BYU I was really ticked off at some things they had done in the administration office on my transcripts and on charges. When I left the MTC after working there I left pretty bitter at one of the full time administrators who said some things that were just wrong.
But you know what? As time went on I came to understand these were individuals that made the mistakes and that the MTC and BYU are amazing institutions. I think Luke (and Gary) have done the same.
We were talking about Staley’s winning TD vs Utah and he was saying it was an audible, because there was a safety blitz and so it took on good block on the corner and the right read by Doman. It looked so easy because Doman made the right reads and audible. I would love to watch a BYU game with this guy to see what he sees.
One last thing that was interesting. He didn’t think Staley really wanted a pro career that bad. He was tired of being hurt and is more of a finesse player anyway. The beating they take in the NFL is brutal. So to ever blame BYU that they ruined a potentially successful NFL career is probably a stretch, if not just flat out untrue. And BYU has reached out and worked on bringing him backing into the alumni fold. Props to BYU for that.
