here's a defense I don't totally buy
In theory, at one point Dany had 100,000 Dothraki.
People on the Internet (experts, of course) noted that there were far fewer than that at the battle of winterfell.
Maybe they were elsewhere (perhaps still being shipped over?).
Still, if that were the case, it should have been addressed.
