Why are we (BYU) fans so awkward

When wearing BYU gear? I’m in an airport lounge in LHR and someone is wearing BYU gear. I say go him “Go cougs” and I get a “thanks” and a shy look away. This has happened so many times to me when I see people in BYU gear. Weird, because other schools are much more social when they are wearing their school colors.
