that coaching was always the only problem. If a promising young player transferred away, it was always claimed to be the fault of the coaching staff. If players leave the school early to play for obscure irrelevant teams in Europe, that's the fault of the coaches, too.
And if you had the audacity to call one of the players selfish for essentially quitting on the team, there was always some random CBer who would lecture you about how these are "student-athletes" who shouldn't be criticized, and how the player "needs to do what's best for him and his family" (which is the dumbest, most hollow statement ever).
A lot of us knew that there were selfish players on the team, but apparently not everybody was able to see that.
