it, BYU showed a fairly effective run game last year, particularly late in the year...and I'm not just talking about the easier opponents. BYU had over 150 yards rushing against Utah...and most of that (over 100 yds) was in the first half. Utah for much of the year last year, was the #1 rushing defense in the country, and going into the BYU game, was averaging allowing less than 100 yards a game. They finished ranked 13th last year. While Zach made some nice throws that game, we actually ran very well on one of the best running defenses in the country....or at least we did until Matt Hadley went down. (BTW, we were still leading by 2 TD's in the 4th qtr with the ball when he went down, which was an underappreciated huge contributor to the loss...we talk about the defensive injuries, which certainly hurt, but we had an answer for their scores until Hadley went down).
It wasn't just Utah, Boise State was a top 25-30 run defense as well, and if you take out the 7 sacks (counted against rushing in NCAA), we had about 150 yards on them too. We rolled up almost 200 yards in Camp Randall as well.
So while the overall stats don't reflect it, BYU showed some glimpses of the ability to run the football against stout opponents...and that with perhaps the weakest RB group BYU has had since 2010. Imagine the running game with Ty'Son Williams behind our line. So I don't think we should just put it all on Zach's arm. We have the potential to be a very balanced offense, which of course, is the most difficult to defend.
