1% sounds great, but you're still talking about a $9 million property so did that person really earn upwards of $90k for what they did? Yes, you could say it's just what it is similar to guys playing a game and making hundreds of millions to do so or CEO's making tens of millions because you hope to get what you pay for and often do.

I think for us regular foks, with houses in the $200-500k range though, the commissions often eat up most of our equity and its really dumb. But, we only have ourselves to blame if we decide to be lazy and pay it rather than do our homework and find an alternative deal.
I do home we continue to trend away from this as free information becomes more readily available.
