bargaining is about strength of position. Even the weakest positions can bargain
and even ask for concessions but whether they'll get them has a lot to do with what other options both sides have. Both sides have needs,

ESPN needs good content at reasonable prices. Usually they have to pay for entire conferences which makes BYU an interesting piece in the fall line up. ESPN's options for individual schools are severely limited if that's what they want and for the last decade, they definitely have. Oh, and ESPN gets access to BYU's broadcast capabilities limiting their costs when it's time to do a home game. If they have to, announcers can do the game remotely. BYU has also brought them eyeballs at less cost than some of their more premium options.

BYU wants exposure but has fewer broadcast options, but ESPN is hardly the only one. This is a piece I don't see talked about much. Doesn't seem like BYU has been very interested in talking to anyone else, but I think they'd be foolish to not at least send out feelers for other interested parties. BYU wants P5 money, but has settled for 'better than G5 money' in the past which makes them a strong discount option for broadcasters, not to mention the production studios BYU can offer that few others can.

Plenty to talk about on the bargaining table.
