I will say that when we were on food assistance in the States...
... We had SO MUCH free fresh food. Every week, we got all these credits for Farmers Markets and produce. Sad but true, I'm much more selective when buying quick spoiling food now that I'm far richer, but paying out of pocket, for the reasons you mention.
