I don’t see BYU getting invited to a P5 conf anytime in the near future — including the next round of expansion talks in 2024. It takes very specific circumstances and a lot of luck to get into that club.

Utah had special seasons and finished top 5 ranked multiple times in the preceding years of an expansion period. Even then, it took the PAC10’s initial expansion plans falling through for Utah to get the invite.

TCU benefitted greatly from geography, as well as having similarly “special” seasons during the years directly preceding expansion talks.

Rutgers got into the BIG10 simply because they’re located with the NY TV market.

All three of these teams also benefitted by being in position to be invited while tv contracts and revenues were still rising.

What has BYU done/what is BYU doing to progress towards P5 inclusion? With all the uncertainty surrounding tv money and payouts, conferences are not itching to add more mouths to feed. BYU cannot recruit the type of athletes to go undefeated with these types of schedules independence brings. BYU’s tv draw, while formidable, is not enough to be invited solely based on that. The LGBTQ vs BYU issues arose during 2016s “expansion talks” and they’ll certainly be more prominent and numerous in the next round of talks.
