The PG trade was made prior to the Celtics signing Hayward
The Celtics couldn't move on PG until the Hayward deal was done, but Indiana wasn't interested in waiting around. The Celtics decided to pass on both Butler and Kawhi, but it's understandable on both counts. Kawhi was coming off a mystery injury and was said to be a rental. Butler ended up going for a decent package of players the first time around and was seeking a max extension at an older age.
