Your only concern is work ethic?

Barrett led the NCAA in charges. Why? Because he couldn't get past his man and was constantly pushing off with his right hand. And he was pushing off with his right, because he is extremely left hand dominant. Even in college, defenders knew he would always bring the ball back into the defense if they played him that way. He is fast in the open court with a long stride, but he does not have the quick feet, the great first step or shake you want at the 2 when trying to beat a defender over on one in the half court. He wants to use his strength to go left and push by his guy to the rim. That will not work in the NBA, and he wasn't even a great finisher in college.

There is no metric yet that forecasts a solid jump shot. Not off the dribble. Not off ball just catching and shooting. Not FT% (67%). Not college 3FG (31%). His shot doesn't go in. You would think with his natural strength, he could drive his shoulder into a guy to create space and rise over. But he didn't do that in college either. I don't think he is a good enough athlete to learn that (if it can be learned) in the NBA.

Based on what I remember of him at Duke and looking at his measurables, he will be maybe a slightly above average defender. Maybe some of that is the effort question of yours. But his length and foot quickness does not say, "yep, that right there is a plus NBA defender."

Barrett is a good ball handler but not great there either by NBA standards. So for the third pick overall, you aren't getting either the first or second option on offense. But he is a great passer, right? Great with the lob. Great bball iq reading the defense quickly in the puck and roll and finding late cutters. But how much will that matter if he cannot make the other team respect his jump shot?

He is a very good defensive rebounder. He is super confident and smart, so he can get better. But there is a lot to develop imo. I stick with my comp that he is a better Evan Turner — solid all around player with no shot. He isn't a bust. He will get heavy usage early in his career, and he will get better. But if I had a chance to trade down for #8 and #10, I would take that. There are a lot of really good role players that do one or two things really, really well to be had in this draft.
