And I wouldn't put all of that on KW.

I think that his deep love and respect is probably more connected to individuals - like Lavell Edwards, other coaches, and players he played with.

If I had to guess, I'd say that there have been plenty of BYU players and fans who have said and done things over the years to taint KW's "deep love and respect" to the point that it isn't necessarily for the institution and is more connected to those individuals.

There were all kinds of stories once KW became HC of Utah that had him burning all of his old BYU memorabilia.

Anyway - I guess I'm saying that even if KW didn't start out with mixed emotions about BYU, I'd guess fans have done enough to change that over time that his affection is no longer for BYU.
