recruit the talent to vie for a future P5 opening. I have heard players and read statements of recruits that one of the important things that drew them to BYU is the big-time schedule in front of us. I'm sorry I don't remember the exact names but I recall one commenting about how exciting it is to go play in the most renowned stadiums in college football. Win or lose, just having that experience is an attraction and motivator to them.
Doubt we retain that attraction when most of our schedule is to playing Witchita State, East Carolina, Temple, etc. I also suspect that P5 conferences will no longer categorize us as a P5 equivalent...and we probably won't be.
Regardless of whether we get more money or not, while we may not officially be in the P5 group, we also aren't relegated to the G5 crowd. Oh, and we aren't spending all the football money we take in now. (Agree, perhaps we should be.)
I believe our priorities should be: 1) attracting P5 level recruits; 2) maintaining high national awareness; 3) building our financial resources; 4) playing for conference championships or bigger name bowl games. Somebody on CB today wrote that we play a bowl game 7 weeks out of 12 this season.
I submit that the first two objectives, key to getting in a P5, are better met by independence than by playing Temple.
