I actually kind of agree with you...
I don't really care about what the sl trib does, but I did care about the attitude surrounding the day I saw from people who wanted to make.it clear they had no love for the lds church. From 2006-2010 I was at the u's hospital and it bugged me that every year residents and others who were either from out of state or wanted to make clear that they were not lds, would carry on about how they celebrated pie and beer day instead of pioneer day.

Im.not from utah and have no particular attachment to pioneer day either, but I found it disrespectful that these people couldn't acknowledge sacrifices made by those who established the civilization in the valley that they were benefiting from (I know there were other previous inhabitants; separate issue). They instead wanted to.make it crystal clear that they were only going to be celebrating pie and beer day and NOT pioneer day.

Im.not French, but im.not going to piss on Bastille day if im.living in france and carry on about how I dont care about it etc.

Maybe I was overly sensitive but my impression of the pie-and-beer people was, "show a little respect!" Things like this during my 4 years at the u were what actually brought me, as an out of stater, from.not caring at all about the Utah/byu rivalry to really having a unique disdain for many of the prevailing attitudes at the university.
