I generally don't like them, either. I started writing this as a 3rd person
book. However, the character is autistic, and it was too clunky to explain how she was experiencing things. After I wrote the first six chapters, I dumped them in a file, and I started over, re-writing everything in first person.

The fourth book, "Incubation," has a different main character. That book, and the ones after it, are written in third person. If you don't mind starting a series in the middle, you could consider going straight to those.
