Basketball or being a father, not really a difficult choice
I understand your desire for dedication to finishing what one starts but there is no question that his job as a father is far more important than being a basketball player. There is no greater calling than that of a parent and as talented as he or any other player is, when anything interferes with his ability to be the father that he aspires to be, then it is not the family he places 2nd, but anything that interferes with his actual purpose. It is easy to assume how he came to his decision, but as he has stated, his decision to go down his current path came only after prayerfully seeking the guidance of God. He is not only making this decision for his wife and child, but also for his own welfare.
It is no different that Eli Herring choosing to go into teaching rather than being a high drafted NFL player. They know that they have fasted and prayed about their next step and they know the answer that they have received. They do not owe us a single thing and I am a bigger fan of any person that places God and family first because they are viewing the world through eternal lenses and not just that of temporal goals. God has a new calling for him and it is to help raise a little boy and any other children that he and his wife have together. We need more players with that type of heart because it shows that they really understand the Family Proclamation and that God will place them in the specific circumstances to help their family and help others that need them. One of my favorite quotes from President Nelson is," In God's Plan, Salvation is an individual matter; Exaltation is a family matter."
If he was meant to finish out his Senior Year or go on to play professional basketball in the U.S. or overseas, he would have received that answer. We all have unique paths that are very specific to our lives, our abilities and gifts, and the paths that prioritize our eternal blessings. I would hope that as BYU fans, we of all fans, would respect and support these types of decisions for BYU or any other athlete/student.
