Anyone have experience with OCD lesions in the knee? Especially in Teenagers?
So we found out about a year ago when getting an x-ray for something else that our (now 13 yr old) son has an OCD lesion in the lateral femoral condyle of his right knee. It's where the bone is basically dying slowly in a small area because of lack of blood flow. You can be born with it or have it as a result of an injury when very young. The Orthopedist asked my son if it ever bothered him. It didn't. He then told us what it was and said that it may never bother him, it may start to hurt, or it could maybe lead to early onset arthritis etc. He just told us to keep an eye on it and if it started to hurt to come see him about it.

Long story short. It started hurting him recently and after seeing a pediatric knee specialist. He'll be having an arthroscopic surgery to treat it next week.
The doctor sounded confident that the surgery would successfully treat the area and allow it to start to ossify again. It seems that the biggest factor in a successful recovery is the patient still having open growth plates because what they're basically doing is drilling small pin holes all through the area up towards the area just under the growth plates. Those growth plates have more blood and nutrients etc so it can help to heal the lesion once the small holes are drilled. The Doctor said that His plates are still wide open so that is good.

Anyways I wanted to see if anyone on here had personal experience with that or had a child that has gone through that.

Thanks!
