I was in nauvoo when a bus of people showed up. It was people from alpine lone
Peak. It looked like a fashion show. I don’t know how to describe it but it was a bizarre experience. The feeling I got was I wouldn’t want to try to compete with those kids. I was pretty popular guy at my high school. But I didn’t have to have money dress or act a certain way to fit in. But it felt like those kids stepped off that bus from another planet. It was palpably uncomfortable in their presence. Chatted with a few of them. One guy older than the high school kids with them looked familiar I asked him how I knew him... it was a former byu basketball guard... if I remember right it was Sam Burgess. He was great to chat with. Seemed humble and affable... he must have been some sort of counselor or youth leader. So yes there are normal good people everywhere but there’s no question in my mind there’s a different set of challenges a teen might face there compared to some other places. Even Burgess alluded to it in my conversation with him. I’ll never forget those kids coming off that bus. It was like they thought they were movie stars or something. Like they owned the world. Oblivious to the world around them. It was intimidating within seconds. But I think a good family could navigate those issues if they moved there.
