1984 had games against Pitt (who ended up with a losing record), Baylor, and a bunch of WAC teams (none of whom were ranked at any point during the season).

1980 had one ranked opponent and only two P5 type opponent (Wisconsin & SMU in the Miracle Bowl). They did lose to New Mexico but sure beat up on North Texas, UNLV, and Long Beach State.

2006, 2007, & 2009 were the most recent "great" BYU teams but BYU was a combined 5-4 against P5 opponents those years.

This year team plays 4 quality P5 opponent in addition to a number of quality G5 opponents who may likely have competed for WAC/MWC titles back in the day. Sure, USU or SDSU may not be national contenders (although SDSU has a favorable schedule and USU finished ranked higher than Boise, Utah, Cal, & Wisconsin last year) but they may be the 7th or 8th toughest games on this years schedule instead of one of the toughest games as in years passed.

If you want results from the great days of the past, you have to play those schedules from the past as well.
