But they still miss strike-ball calls that affect the game. Maybe an at bat is extended and results in the batter getting on base. Maybe a bad call is the difference between a pitcher having a 12 pitch inning and a 30 pitch inning.
But what is driving me nuts lately is them getting fooled by catchers "framing" a pitch. Framing a pitch used to mean that the catcher kept the glove inside the strike zone and let the pitch (on the edge or slightly out of the zone) bounce off the inside edge of the glove instead of centering it in the pocket. It was an optical illusion for the umpire and easy to get suckered.
My friends and I used to make fun of Ramon Hernandez back in the day for catching the ball outside the zone and bringing the glove back. It was amateurish and didn't fool umpires. Now this is sop for catchers and I see umpires calling strikes all the time.
I wanted an automatic strike zone 15+ years ago and nothing has changed my mind.
