BYU to go back to the MWC, or other G5 conference.
I was just surprised to hear Fitz say that he had spoken to Bronco, and then quote Bronco as saying he left primarily due to Independence.
(Do you believe Bronco said that?)
I believe the #1 reason he left was a BIG pay raise. And while Virginia had not been good under the prior coach, it's a good school, in a beautiful part of the country, with a P5 program, a P5 budget, and no honor code.
It'd be interesting to tap Bronco's brain, and extract all the data. He seemed enthusiastic, in 2010, when BYU announced that it was going Independent, but within a few years was saying it's unsustainable. To me, that suggests one of two things:
1. Indy didn't work the way that Bronco had anticipated.
2. He only expected Independence to last a few years, and that the purpose of Independence was to launch BYU into the Big-XII (or other P5 conference).
I'm way more inclined to believe #2.
I like Bronco a lot, despite his eccentricities, and think he was the perfect coach to clean up, and rebuild BYU into a good program.
But I also love Kalani. He's a good coach, and a great man. AND he took the BYU job knowing that Independence was at least a 8-9 year reality. He knew what he was getting into.
